I’ve been around the internet for quite awhile, blogging as theHoundDawg about politics and sports for several years, and building and operating affiliate web sites for much longer. My friends on affiliate marketing forums know me as AffiliateHound.
After spending my life as a dedicated carnivore, this lifestyle began conflicting with my deep love for our co-inhabitants on earth. As dog and cat lovers, we’ve had many of them share our home for decades, but we also feel strongly about the right to live and enjoy life that cows and chickens and horses and bears and fish and all the rest are also entitled.
My daughter and son-in-law have been vegans for many years, and my wife, hereinafter referred to as MrsHound, and I have always tried to respect their beliefs when together with them, when we visit them in Seattle, when they visit us in West Covina (20 miles due east of Los Angeles), or when we meet on neutral turf.
We have, thus, seen first hand some of the trials and tribulations of trying to follow a vegan diet in a carnivorous world.
Well, the young’ins visited us last June, and we went with them to the Farm Sanctuary’s Animal Acres in Acton, CA, and as MrsHound and I completed the tour, we each had a revelation: That we could no longer be a contributing part of the unbearable pain and suffering being inflicted upon farm animals. I have been able to adapt relatively easily, and have had very little, if any, desire for meat, chicken, or most of what I gave up. I do have a hankering for seafood now and then, but what I do miss most of all are certain dairy products, like ice cream, and sour cream & onion potato chips. MrsHound has had a much more difficult time, though, as she has several serious medical problems, including diabetes, and finding vegan substitutes for many of her staples has been more difficult.
Due to her physical problems, I do the cooking, so this blog will be primarily about finding foods and recipes, and cooking and coping with, as I said, being a vegan in a carnivorous world.
